Study Finds Alarming Levels of PFAS “Forever Chemicals” Among Americans & Water Sources

Do you know what’s coming out of your tap? Water contamination has been a hot topic in the U.S. in recent years and now a new study, released in July 2023 revealed that 45% of American tap water has “one or more PFAS, known as ‘forever chemicals’.” Tap water was examined in all 50 states by the U.S. Geological Survey from 2016 to 2021, where water tests discovered that almost half of the faucets contained PFAS (per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances).

The study is the most comprehensive ever completed on the nation’s water and included testing tap water from 716 locations including private wells and public sites in all 50 states, plus the Virgin Islands, District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. “Forever chemicals” or PFAS are listed as part of a class of thousands of substances listed by the study as “national and global human-health concerns due to environmental prevalence and persistence, toxicity, and human exposures through water and food.”

In a recent report, CBS News published that over 95% of Americans have “detectable levels” of PFAS in their blood. These “forever chemicals” are linked to myriad of health problems, including some forms of cancer. Unfortunately, since the chemicals have been widely used in everything from non-stick cookware to food packaging and persist for extended periods of time, PFAS are quickly posing a serious health hazard for the future. In fact, according to CBS News, for the first time in history the EPA is proposing strict regulations to limit PFAS in drinking water to prevent increased water contamination, recommending levels 90% lower than previous standards.
